Jessica T Inspired By...Tschuggen Bergoase

Thursday, 20 October 2011
Sometimes ideas and designs come from the most mundane of beginnings …

While sitting on a small plane on my way from Hong Kong to a remote part of China, I began to read one of the on-board magazines to pass the three hour flight. Quite surprised that the mag had some sections in English (the airline I was flying with is a small southern China operator) I came across an article about the Tschuggen Bergoase Spa in Switzerland.

Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the nine "light trees" bathe the below four floors of treatment and therapy rooms in light. The bold geometric lines of the trees pierce the mountain landscape behind.

Taking stock of this, I wanted to create a wallet that was simple yet bold, while still maintaing its functionality - after all, we use our wallets every day! The final embossed pattern on the wallets is a mix of static and curved lines, the circular closure piece mirrors the curved lines within the embossed pattern.

And as for the name...Tschuggen Bergoase is a little tricky to pronounce, so I put my own spin on it, removing the T and one G from 'Tschuggen' and the a from 'Bergoase'.

Say 'Shoe - gen Ber - goes' (Schugen Bergose)

Definitely less European-sounding, but much easier for us lazy English speakers to say!

What's That Sound?

Thursday, 1 September 2011
I like that sound,

I love that sound!

It’s the sound of my shoes!

I love it when you find accidental creations that only a select few people would actually see due to some slightly different wiring in their creative brains. I came across this concrete stiletto whilst on a run on a familiar track in my local area, I would have run over this somewhat distorted shoe figure more than 50 times, yet once I stopped to check it out, it became something to look forward to on this particular running track. I know it sounds silly but the small thing really do make us happy, and when I cross paths with the stiletto I smile a little inside.

I love shoes
I’m superficial
Whatever.

It may be shallow, and it may be simple, but in some ways this is my motto, and I imagine I am not alone in sharing a Barbie-like lust for shoes. I also love to create little treasures that make others happy, and the ‘It’s The Sound of My Shoes Scarf’ represents this almost childlike obsession with the humble shoe. Subtle and stylish, it feeds that footwear addiction without having to save for 5 years to buy a pair of Louboutins!

Also check out the track ‘Shoes’ by Tiga - the film clip is so overly cheesy it is amazing!

Chinese Craftsmanship

Wednesday, 24 August 2011
Image via Beijing Today

As a general rule, the words ‘China’ and ‘quality’ are unfortunately not used together often. This is largely due to the demand for ever lower prices from western multi-national chains for the lucrative discount retail market, as well as the tenacity of the Chinese people to copy luxury goods (sometimes with frightening accuracy!)

There is, however, a change in the air, and there is a small movement of people determined to show the world that not everything out of China is of poor quality.

Ask any Baby Boomer - when they were growing up, all those cheap imported goodies came from Japan(!)  now one of the most expensive cities in the world, and certainly not considered a hub of cheap factories.

Gradually this shifted to Taiwan. I remember when I was very young seeing the ‘Made in Taiwan’ logo stamped across many items in discount stores. As it stands, China holds the cheap foreign manufacture flag, but not for long.

With the re-evaluation of the Yuan, sky rocketing labor prices and a growing middle class, China’s days as the worlds' bargain factory are numbered. Not only is the price of the raw materials increasing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit and retain highly-skilled factory workers.

That's precisely why it's more important than ever to have amazing suppliers who understand both quality and economy. We travel throughout Asia multiple times a year to meet the fantastic teams who make Jessica T products come to life. Our suppliers are far more than factories - they're friends.

In addition to fab suppliers, China, and especially Hong Kong, is producing some world class designers from all fields to rival those of Milan or London, and the obvious oriental background gives them a fresh take on design. There is definitely a ‘Hong Kong’ style, and with a little insider knowledge it's easy to spot and is becoming increasingly desirable.

For a little glimpse into the latest and greatest designs from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, have a peek at ‘Nicely Made in China’ - times are a-changin'!
